JICA Signed $ 50 million Loan Agreement with Hattha Kaksekar Limited to Support MSMEs in Cambodia

On 27th March 2020, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed $50 million loan agreement with Hattha Kaksekar Limited (HKL), one of the leading deposits taking microfinance institution in Cambodia to provide fund to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the rural areas of the country.

The loan will contribute to HKL lending activity expansion to MSMEs in rural areas. According to JICA Press Release, the loan is designed for supporting MSMEs in growing, creating more jobs, improving financial access for MSMEs in rural areas, and reducing poverty and regional disparity in Cambodia. Most importantly, MSME’s growth is an important part of empowerment of women. Thus, it will contribute not only to sustainable economic growth, but also to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) 8, 9 and 17.

HKL is a subsidiary of Bank of Ayudhya Public Limited Company (Krungsri), the fifth largest commercial bank in Thailand, and a member of MUFG Bank which is the largest banking group in Japan, and also one of the largest and most diversified financial groups in the world. Recently, 82% of HKL’s customers are based in the rural areas and 61% of loans are extended to women customers. In response to the customers’ needs of financial services, HKL has located 177 branches across the country to provide the financial inclusion and services to MSMEs and customers such as, SME loan, savings and deposit, money transfer, payroll, ATMs and Mobile Banking in both rural and urban areas.
